Abstract:The historical development of the relationship between paediatrics and child psychiatry is outlined and the closer working relationships between the two disciplines over the past 30 years are noted. Various ways in which child psychiatrists can contribute to paediatric practice are described, as well as the degree to which paediatricians can contribute to an understanding of child psychiatric disorders. It is suggested that new developments in paediatric practice and an increase in interest in genetic and brain mechanisms in child psychiatric disorders, will increase the need for collaboration between the two specialties.
