Abstract:Aim: To measure the volume of the the basal ganglia in controls and the patients with Parkinson's disease(PD) and essential tremor(ET) by MRI, and to compare the difference of that between the controls and the patients. Methods: The volume of the caudate, putamen of 9 ET patients, 5 PD patients and 8 age-matched controls on a 1.ST MR scanner were measured and the volumes of interest in different subjects were compared. Results: The standardized volume of the caudate, putamen in PD patients decreased obviously, compared with the controls(P〈0.05). Patients with ET did not differ from the controls on the standardized volume of the caudate, putamen. Conclusion: The volume of the caudate, putamen in PD patients decreased, while that in ET patients did not.
