Abstract:Objective To investigate the anti-oxidative effects of proanthocyanidins(PC) in the heart and brain of the aged rat induced by D-galactose.Methods Fifty healthy Wistar rats which were 6 months,were divided into 5 groups randomly: control group,model group,Vitamin E(VE) group,the two PC groups with the dose of 120 mg/kg and 60 mg/kg,and each group had 10 rats.The rats in the 5 groups received some handling respectively.The activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD),contents of malondialdehyde(MDA) and activities of glutathion peroxidase(GSH-Px) were respectively detected in the heart and brain of the 5 groups.Results As compared with the control group,there was significant decrease in the activities of SOD and GSH-Px,and significant increase in the content of MDA in the heart and brain of model group(P<0.01).As compared with the model group,there was significant increase in the activities of SOD and GSH-Px,and significant decrease in the content of MDA in the heart and brain of the three treatment groups(P<0.01).There were no significant differences in the heart and brain of between the PC group with the dose of 120 mg/kg and the VE group(P>0.05).As compared with the PC group with the dose of 120 mg/kg and the VE group,there were significant differences in the activities of SOD and GSH-Px,and the content of MDA in the heart and brain of PC group with the dose of 60 mg/kg(P<0.01).Conclusion PC has the anti-oxidative effects in the aged rat induced by D-galactose.
