Toll-like receptor and tumor immunity

The discovery of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) is one of the most important events in the field of immunology and medicine.TLRs are a family of receptors in innate immunity and one kind of pattern recognition receptors,which can recognize the pathogen-associated molecular patterns to activate immune responses.TLRs are expressed not only in immune cells but also in tumor cells,and TLRs play an important role in tumor development.The activation of TLRs can either promote or inhibit tumor growth.The underlying mechanism is poorly understood.TLRs can also recognize endogenous ligands,namely danger-associated molecular patterns,which is critical for forming chronic microenvironment of tumors.Here we review the role of TLRs in tumor development,and discuss the recent progress and future direction.
