Efficacy of aromatherapy for postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients with malignant gynecologic tumors

Objective The aim of this study is to discuss the efficacy of aromatherapy in relieving postoperative nausea and vomiting( PONV) among gynecologic cancer patients. Methods Two hundred and two pateints who underwent surgery for malignant gynecologic tumors at Cancer Hospital,Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences were selected from January 2019 to August 2019. They were divided into an experiment group( 102 patients) and a control group( 100 patients). The experiment group was given aromatherapy with lemon fragrance on the basis of conventional nursing and the control group was only given conventional nursing. The incidence of nausea and vomiting and the incidence of severe nausea and vomiting were compared between the two groups at 2 h,6 h,12 h and 24 h after the surgery. Results There was no significant difference in pain at 2 h,6 h,12 h and 24 h after the surgery. There were significant differences in the incidence of PONV at 6 h,12 h and 24 h after the surgery and in the incidence of severe PONV at 6 h and 12 h after the surgery( all P < 0. 05). No adverse reactions was observed in the experiment group. Patient acceptance of lemon fragrance was high and patient satisfaction was 98. 0%( 100 patients). 98. 0%patients hoped this therapy was continued. Conclusion Aromatherapy with lemon fragrance can effectively relieve postoperative nausea and vomiting among gynecology cancer patients.
