Abstract:Objective: To study the energy metabolism on adults with abnormal body weight. Method: Twenty four men aged 20-30 years old were chosen as the subjects whose BMI were more than 25 in obesity group, less than 18.5 in lean group and from 18.5 to 23 in normal group. K4b2 expiry monitor was used to study the energy metabolism of the subjects. Results: The total food intakes, the total energy intakes and the basal metabolism expenditure of the obese subjects were significantly higher than those in the normal and the lean group (P<0.05), but their basal metabolism rates were lower than those in the normal and the lean group. The values of thermic effect (TEF) of food were the highest in lean subjects, while those of the obese subjects were the lowest. When they did the same items of sports, the obese subjects spent more energy than the normal and the lean subjects. The PAR( physical activity rate) values of the lean were the highest, while those of the obese were the lowest. Conclusion: Energy metabolism in the obese subjects is characterized with higher energy intake, lower basal metabolism rate, lower TEF [kJ/(kg 9·4h)] and lower TEE (body weight), while that in the lean subjects is characterized with lower energy intake, higher basal metabolism rate, higher TEF and higher TEE.
