Correlation between uric acid levels and body mass index in young males and females

Objective To investigate the correlation between uric acid level and body mass index(BMI)among young males and females.Methods A total of 1223 subjects aged 18 to 44 from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University were selected in the study.They were divided into high uric acid group and normal uric acid group(NUA group).Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors of hyperuricemia(HUA)in different genders.They were divided into lean group,normal group,overweight group and obesity group according to BMI.The prevalence and risk factors of HUA in each group were analyzed.Results The prevalence rate of HUA in young males was higher than that in young females,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).With the increase of BMI,UA level increased gradually(r=0.41).In BMI group,the prevalence of HUA in obesity group and overweight group was higher than that in normal group and lean group,and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).Alanine aminotransferase and triglyceride levels in males and females in high uric acid group were higher than those in NUA group,aspartate aminotransferase and creatinine in young males in high uric acid group were higher than those in NUA group,and high density lipoprotein cholesterol was lower than that in NUA group.Crea(OR=1.01),triglyceride(OR=1.23),and fasting blood glucose(OR=0.75)were independent risk factors for HUA in young males.The OR values of normal group,overweight group and obesity group were 0.20,0.23 and 0.54 respectively.Conclusion The prevalence rate of HUA in young males is significantly higher than that in young females.With the increase of BMI,UA level increase gradually.Young males and young females have independent risk factors for HUA:Crea,TG,and FBG are independent risk factors for HUA in males.The growth of BMI is a risk factor for HUA in females.
