Practical Methods for Small Area Estimation in Sample Surveys

Demand for reliable statistics has greatly increasing in recent years because of the growing use of small areas in formulating policies and programs, allocation of funds and regional planning. Practical relevance and theoretical interest of small area estimation have attracted the attention of many researchers, leading to important advances in point and mean squared error estimation. This paper gives a review of some practical methods for small area estimation.In particular,it considers topics covered,direct and indirect estimation,with design-based and model-based estimators.
