Progress on intensity-modulated radiotherapy for naso pharyngeal carcinoma

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a more advanced radiotherapy technique and has been effectively utilized in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). An increasing body of clinical evidence has indicated that IMRT not only improved the treatment outcome including patients' prognosis, but also provides an improved adverse-effect prof ile thus patients' quality of life as compared to conventional radiotherapy and 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy. The effective utilization of IMRT in the treatment of NPC relies on accurate delineation of the target volumes including gross tumor volume, clinical target volume, as well as the organs at risk. This article reviewed the utilization of IMRT in the treatment of NPC in regard to target volume delineation, radiation dose, clinical outcome, and treatment-related toxicity.
