Abstract: | With evidence of the oncological safety of skin and nipple sparing mastectomy, the options for breast reconstruction after mastectomy have been increased. This and the continuous improvement of the available silicone breast implants has resulted in the fact that heterologous breast reconstruction is the most frequently performed surgical procedure for breast reconstruction following mastectomy for breast cancer. With the additional introduction of supportive alloplastic materials, such as synthetic meshes and acellular dermal matrices, the indications for implant-based breast reconstruction can be expanded for an additional critically selected patient collective. This is a further step towards improved quality of life for these breast cancer patients. It should be noted that these supportive alloplastic materials do not represent a solution for all problems or challenges associated with implant-based breast reconstruction and need to be critically considered. This article gives an overview of the available materials and discusses their use in a critical context. |
