Abstract: | Summary A 42-year-old man was treated with interferon- for chronic hepatitis B; during the fourth week of treatment he developed an exacerbation of liver disease, and nuclear and smooth muscle autoantibodies, which were previously negative, were detected in very high titers. After discontinuation of interferon therapy, ALT values subsided promptly and autoantibodies disappeared within a few months. This sequence of events strongly suggests a direct relationship between IFN treatment and a self-limited hepatitis with autoimmune markers in this case. |
