Long-term stability of combined orthodontic-surgical treatment of skeletal open bite

Objective To study the long-term skeletal and dento-alveolar stability after 15 years of surgical-orthodontic correction of skeletal anterior open bite. Methods 10 (8 female and 2 male) patients with anterior open bite who underwent orthodontic treatment in combination with bimaxillary surgery at Hannover Medical University were reviewed. All patients underwent Le Fort I osteotomies combined with bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. The cephalometric records of these patients were examined at the start of orthodontic treatment(T1), the end of orthodontic treatment(T2) and at average of 15 years of follow-up after surgery (T3). 8 skeletal and 5 dental cephalometric measurements were selected. Results Although some skeletal relapse was observed in patients with skeletal open bite after 15 years of surgery, overbite remained stable, which is mainly due to the eruption of upper and lower incisors during the follow-up period. Conclusions Treatment of skeletal open bite via Le Fort I and Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomies should be an effective option in treatment of skeletal open bite.
