Abstract:Objective To investigate whether Epigallocathechin-3 gallate(EGCG) and green tea extract(GTE) supplementation could attenuate the development of cardiac hypertrophy induced by volume overload.Methods Cardiac hypertrophy was induced by aortocaval shunt(ACS) in rats and evaluated by determining the heart to body weight(HW/BW) ratio or cross sectional area.Results Cardiac hypertrophy induced by ACS for 3 weeks was significantly attenuated by administration of EGCG or GTE.Attenuation of cardiac hypertrophy by EGCG was associated with attenuation of the increase in myocyte cell size induced by volume overload.Hypertrophied hearts are known to be vulnerable to ischemia.EGCG or GTE administration not only inhibited cardiac hypertrophy but also enhanced cardiac function during ischemia reperfusion injury.Conclusion EGCG prevent the development of cardiac hypertrophy due to volume overload and may be a useful therapeutic modality to suppress cardiac hypertrophy in patients.
