Psychology of homosexuals and contributing factors of homosexuality

Objective To investigate the mental health condition of homosexuals and contributing factors of homosexuality. Methods 51 homosexuals who met CCMD-2-R diagnostic criteria for homosexuality were examined with DSMD, MMPI, EPQ and the Mental Health Scale for Homosexuals. This group was stud- ied and followed up for at least one year. Results 72% of homosexuals were found to lack normal family atmo- sphere, espectially mother's love, in their childhood. We could not distinguish between homosexuality and non-homosexuality by EPQ. 33% of homosexuals had attempted suicide previously. After following up this group for one to two years, all 51 homosexuals still retained their homosexual inclination. Conclusion Though many factors contribute to homosexuality, lack of normal family atmosphere, espectially mother's love, in childhood is an important predisposing factor in most homosexuals. Homosexuals enduring psychological crises need help from psychologists and psychiatrists.
