Utilization and rationality of proton pump inhibitors in hepatobiliary surgery patients

Objective To evaluate the rationality of proton pump inhibitor(PPI)usage on inpatients in hepatobiliary surgery ward of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital(hereinafter referred to asour hospital).Methods Data of drug varieties,usage amount and consumption sum of PPI of inpatients was extracted from hospital information system(HIS),defined daily dose method was adopted to analyze the utilization rate,defined daily doses(DDDs),use density(UD),defined daily cost(DDC),drug utilization index(DUI),prescribed daily dose(PDD)of PPI.The medical records of inpatients using PPI were extracted from the electronics medical records,then the general situation and rationality of using PPI were analyzed retrospectively.Results Medical records of 963 patients were collected,utilization rate,DDDs,UD,DUI,PDD of PPI were very high.A total of 621 patients(64.49%)were involved in the inappropriate use of PPI,which mainly inlcuded 39.36%no indication and 21.91%inappropriate prevention.Conclusion In the process of PPI use,there were some problems such as no medication indications,inappropriate administration route,excessive dose,long duration of medication,inappropriate timing of administration,and inappropriate combination of drugs.Therefore,management and intervention should be strengthened to regulate the rational use of PPI.
