MSM population size estimation and behavior characteristics in Shanghai Pudong New Area

Objective To explore the population size of men who have sex with men (MSM) in Pudong New Area, the distribution of offline active dating sites, behavior characteristics, safe sexual behaviors and detection status. Methods The "multicenter-capture-recapture method" was used to estimate the population size of men who have sex with men (MSM). The nuclear density analysis method was used to analyze the offline dating sites and styles. Chi-square test was used to analyze the sexual behavior characteristics. Logistic regression model was used to analyze the the factors influencing safe sexual characteristics. Results The size of the MSM population in Pudong New Area was estimated to be 4 386 (95% CI: 1 258-7 514). The offline dating sites of the MSM in Pudong New Area were mainly in the northwest. Besides fitness venues, there are various entertainment venue including parks, green spaces, men’s toilets and sauna rooms, etc. Most of activity scale is small(n≤5), accounting for 61.17 percent. The large scale (n=50~100), only accounts for 3.72 percent. The relationships among different age, marital status, education, sexual orientations, sexual behaviors in the past six months, whether or not to use rush and were statistically significant different with safe sexual behaviors (P<0.05). Conclusion The capture-recapture method is used to estimate the active MSM population size and it is significant.The behavior characteristics, safe sexual behavior, dating sites and styles are complex. Online and offline surveys are combined to locate the types of offline activities accurately. Investigation and targeted intervention on high-risk behaviors and hot spot sites are of great significance to the prevention and control of AIDS. And targeted interventions on high-risk behaviors and hot spots, are of great significance for AIDS prevention and control.
