Abstract: | Respiration rates were determined for rat sciatic nerves at rest and during electrical stimulation by the standard Warburg manometric technique. Oxygen-uptake rates were increased by 60 per cent during the application of electrical pulses to normal nerves, nerves from animals in hypoglycemic coma, and nerves undergoing Wallerian degeneration. Substrate utilization patterns were significantly altered during electrical stimulation of nerves from all three groups of animals. Our results suggest that the respiratory activity of Schwann cells may be quantitatively altered during electrical stimulation while the metabolism of the active axis cylinder undergoes both qualitative and quantitative changes. |
