Severe myocardial injury and rhabdomyolysis from acute oral amphetamine abuse

We report a case of a previously healthy young man who developed severe myocardial injury and rhabdomyolysis after a single oral ingestion of amphetamine. Such major toxicity is more usually associated with the use of intravenous amphetamine or chronic amphetamine abuse. Both physicians and potential drug users need to be aware that a single oral ingestion of amphetamine may produce severe, life-threatening toxicity.
