Clinical analysis of laparoscopic appendectomy vs.open appendectomy for acute appendicitis

Objective To compare the results of laparoscopic appendectomy（LA）vs, open appendectomy（OA）for acute appendicitis. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on 396 patients who underwent appendectomy from May 2005 to May 2010. The variables analyzed included patients＇ data [white blood cell count（W-BC）, operating data（length of the procedure and pathology）], postoperative data（postoperative incision infection and length of hospital stay）and total costs. Results There was no significant difference in demographic data of patients（age and sex）, preoperative WBC, and pathology between LA and OA groups. The average operating time in LA group was longer than in OA group（P 〈0. 01 ）. The incision infection rate in LA group was significantly lower than in OA group（P 〈0. 01）. The median post-operative length of hospital stay（LOS）in LA group was significantly shorter than in LA group（P 〈0. 01）. There was no significant difference in the mean total cost between two groups. Conclusion In comparison to OA, LA has reduced lower incision infection rate.
