Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of aerosolized pulmonary surfactant on the blood oxygenation in rats with acute lung injury. Methods Forty three rats were randomly divided into four groups: sham group (operated only, n=10), model group(n=10), air-NS group (inhaling aerosolized normal saline, n=10), and air-PS group (inhaling aerosolized 160 mg PS, n=13). ALI was induced by 20% of oleic acid through jugular vein.Arterial blood gas and breathing rate of all groups were determined during the experiment. Survival rate was determined after experiment. Results PS aerosolization led to a gradual increase of PaO2 and SaO2. PaO2 and SaO2 increased to 99.4mmHg and 98.2% respectively after four hours, which had significant difference with air-NS group (p<0.05). Inhalation of aerosolized PS significantly decreased the breathing rate within half an hour and caused a gradual decrease to 100 breaths/minute after four hours. The survival rate in air-PS group was 100%, which had significant difference with air-NS group (60%, P < 0.05). Conclusion Aerosolized PS through spontaneous breathing is an effective, simple, and safe method for administration of exogenous surfactant.
