Effect of hyperbaric oxygen combined with acupuncture on ischemic stroke patients with dysphagia

Objective To observe the curative effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy combined with acupuncture on the swallowing function of ischemic stroke patients.Methods A total of 160 cases of ischemic stroke patients admitted to Jiangsu Jianhu People’s Hospital Affiliated to Nantong University from May 2017 to May 2020 were divided into control group and observation group according to the random number table method,with 80 cases in each group.Patients in both groups were given conventional medication,hyperbaric oxygen therapy,as well as conventional training exercise for dysphagia rehabilitation.The observation group was given acupuncture therapy in addition.The swallowing function of patients in both groups before and after treatment was evaluated by Standardized Swallowing Assessment(SSA),their cognitive function were measured by Mini Mental Status Exam(MMSE),and their quality of life was evaluated by Stroke-Specific Quality of Life(SS-QOL)scale.Results Before treatment,there were no statistically significant differences in the scores of the swallowing function,cognitive functions and quality of life between the two groups.After treatment,the observation group’s swallowing function score was(21.02±2.76),which was lower than that(26.35±4.11)of the control group,with statistically significant difference(P<0.05).The scores of cognitive functions such as orientation,instantaneous memory,and language function in the observation group were higher than those in the control group,with statistically significant differences(P<0.05).The scores of quality of day-to-day life including family roles,language,and mobility in the observation group were also higher than those in the control group,with statistically significant differences(P<0.05).Conclusion Hyperbaric oxygen combined with acupuncture can significantly improve the swallowing function and cognitive function of ischemic stroke patients,and it is well worthy of clinical application.
