Diagnosis and treatment of traumatic cerebrovascular injury: current status and prospect

Traumatic cerebrovascular injury (TCVI) is rare complication of cervical injuries and traumatic brain injuries. Its mortality and morbidity are high without medical intervention. The low incidence of TCVI results in inadequate knowledge about it. Up to now, researchers have discovered a few risk factors of TCVI, including basicranial injury and cervical spine injury. A preliminary scale categorizing TCVI has been established according to its pathological changes. DSA is generally accepted as the golden standard in diagnosing and screening, and the efficiency of CTA is still ambiguous. As for the treatment, conservative treatment, open surgery, and endovascular treatment are identified to receive promising outcomes in specific types of TCVI. This review summarize the status quo of TCVI clinical research, and outlooked the future development of this field.
