Marchiafava- Bignami disease: an analysis of clinical and angiographic fingdings ( 4 cases reports attached)

Objective To study the clinical features and angiographic findings and to improve the understanding of Marchiafava-Bignami disease（MBD）.Methods A retrospective analysis of clinic and radiological features was conducted in 4 cases of MBD.Results The 4 patients had a long history of severe alcoholism.The main clinical manifestations of MBD included mental symptoms,incoordination and progressive dementia.CT revealed large low-density areas in the genu and the splenium of the corpus callosum.MR showed hyporintensity on TI and hypeerintensity on T2 in the genu and the splenium of the corpus callosum.High dose vitamin B is effective for MBD.Conclusion The pathogeny of MBD is possibly due to drinking wine magnanimously and chronically.The main features of acute MBD is sudden onset of psychonosem.Chronic MBD is characterized by chronic and progressive congnitive impairment,mental disturbances and ataxia.MR and CT are main effective medalities for the diagnosis of MBD.The symmetrical lesions located in the genu and in the splenium of corpus callosum on MR and CT are major angiographic abnormalities.There is no specific therapy of MBD nowadays.High dose vitamin B can improve symptoms.
