Correlation analysis of procalcitonin and glucocorticoid usage in acute urticaria

Objective： To investigate the correlation between procalcitonin (PCT) and glucocorticoid usage in acute urticaria. Methods：Fifty six cases of acute urticaria patients with elevated PCT were randomly divided into two groups. The control group was given antihistamine and antibiotics, while the study group was given antihistamine, antibiotics, and glucocorticoids. Disease activity, PCT levels and length of hospital stay were compared between these two groups. Results：Both disease activity scores and PCT levels differed significantly between the study group and the controls 3 days after hospitalization (disease activity scores: 2.18±0.86 vs 3.11±1.07， t=3.58, P<0.05; PCT: 0.11±0.17 vs 0.29±0.30， t=2.73, P<0.05). The average length of hospital stay of the study group was shorter than that of the control group (6.25±1.46 vs 7.96±2.03 days, t=3.63, P<0.05). Conclusion:Early administration of glucocorticoids can significantly decrease PCT levels, improve symptoms and shorten the length of hospital stay in acute urticaria patients with elevated PCT levels.
