| Abstract: | Infection and persistent low-grade inflammation in peripheral tissues are important pathogenic factors in depression.Depression is usually related to systemic inflammatory diseases/conditions,such as periodontitis.Periodontitis is an infectious disease of the periodontal tissues.It has also been clinically observed that the incidence of depression in periodontitis patients is higher than that in non-periodontitis patients.There may be a certain relationship between depression and periodontitis,and the underlying mechanism of this relationship may be immune-mediated chronic systemic inflammation.In this review,we focus on the biological and epidemiological evidence of periodontitis and depression,and review the research progress in the correlation between the two. |
