Practice of narratives and storytelling in standardized training of newly graduated nurses

Objective To enhance the empathic ability and professional identity of newly graduated nurses. Methods Sixty-five newly graduated nurses were required to record patient experiences and their own feelings of work during standardized training, then they shared what they wrote in class. Each nurse wrote one record and the effect was evaluated after 6 months. Results The total score and three dimension scores of the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy-Health Professionals in newly graduated nurses were significantly higher at post intervention (P<0.01 for all). Three themes were identified from 65 documentations, including feeling needed; developing nurse-patient relationship; and stabilizing professional ideology. Conclusion Practice of narratives and storytelling in standardized training of newly graduated nurses is helpful to enhance their empathic ability and professional identity.
