Prevention and strategies of infectious complications in retrograde ureteroscopy

With the development and popularity ofretrograde ureteroscopy in the treatment of urinary calculi, the incidence ofpostoperative urogenic sepsis increases. Urinary calculi and urinary tractinfection are inseparable, and a large part of the economic burden is biased toinfection-related calculi. Urinary tract infection is the most commonpostoperative complication after calculi surgery, and the further developmentof urogenic sepsis is life-threatening. The risk of infection is influenced byvarious factors, including comorbidities, anatomic abnormalities, surgicalfactors, and local antimicrobial sensitivity. Understanding these risks andappropriate steps to mitigate them are important parts of reducingpostoperative morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this article is to reviewcurrent literatures for the prevention and management of calculi associatedinfection complications associated with retrograde ureteroscopy.
