Abstract: | Depression is a significant psychiatric disorder in children and adolescents which can result in serious consequences such as school absenteeism and decreased educational attainment. Recent studies have shown that children and adolescents present with a different spectrum of symptoms than adults with depression. Furthermore, depression in the young is more frequently comorbid with other psychiatric disorders than in adult patients, further complicating diagnosis. Once the condition is diagnosed, it is clear that treatment is necessary. Although early clinical data suggest that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or psychotherapy may provide effective treatment, further clinical trials are required in young patients. |
