Abstract:Purpose To determine the clinical characteristics of urinary tract infection (UTI) in diabetics. Methods Significant bacteriuria from 179 resident patients were included in the study. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the presence or absence of diabetes. Medical records were reviewed including the clinical information, type of organism isolated and their antibiotic resistence. Results Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) was more common in diabetics and the eradication of UTI seemed to be more difficult in diabetics than in non-diabetics. Diabetics were more likely to have multiple organisms infections, and yeast was the most common isolate in their hospital acquired infection. There was no great difference in antibiotic resistence between the two groups. Conclusions The culture of the urine should be emphasized in diabetics, and the combination of antibiotics and the usage of antifungal drugs might be needed in the management of UTI in diabetics.
Keywords:urinary tract infection  risk factors  diabetics  non-diabetics
