Abstract:
Attachment of encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus to many species of erythrocytes requires sialic acid residues on the cell surface. Apart from bovine erythrocytes which are not agglutinated by EMC virus, different species of erythrocytes require different numbers of virions for hemagglutination. These differences are apparently not related to the sialic acid content of the erythrocytes or to the rate at which they bind virus but may be related to the total number of viral receptors available per cell.
