Five specimens were taken from each of four groups of patients: congenital heart disease (CHD), advanced liver cirrhosis, terminal nephritis and sudden death without evident impairment of sodium homeostasis as control. The distribution and number of the specific granules containing atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) were analysed by electron microscopy. While there were similar distributi on a numbers of ANP granules were found in the patients with cirrhosis and nephritis. In addition, more ANP granules were in the cardiocytes of patients with cirrhosis than that in patients with nephritis. The results of the morphological study suggest that an increase of ANP synthesis occurred in the myo-cardial cells of patients with cirrhosis and nephritis, which might result in the elevation of serum ANP in them. |
