Myeloid-derived suppressor cells: connection between inflammation and cancer

It has been established that cancer can be promoted by inflammation. Indeed, chronic inflammation orchestrates a tumor-supporting microenvironment that is an indispensable participant in the tumorigenesis and play critical roles at the different stages of tumor development. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC)accumulate in response to pro-inflammatory mediators and they use a variety of mechanisms to block both innate and adaptive anti-tumor immunity. Because of their critical role in obstructing immune responses,MDSCs are a strategic obstacle to immunothe rapies that require activation of the host' s cell-mediated and innate immune responeses.
