Abstract: | ![]() Urinary incontinence is a pervasive condition affecting between 30 and 40 percent of North American women over the age of 30. Most patients see a physician with the hopes of receiving both an explanation for the incontinence and effective therapy. The majority of women undergoing evaluation of incontinence for the first time have neither major lower urinary tract disease nor uncommon neurologic abnormalities. Although a comprehensive evaluation of every patient ensures that nothing will be overlooked, such an unwavering approach is neither cost effective not necessary to maintain a standard of exemplary patient care. This article outlines a triage approach to the investigation and management of urinary incontinence which is designed to achieve the goals of both the patient and the physician, while making efficient use of health care resources. |
