Clinical Observation of Concurrent Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy in the Treatment of Locally Advanced Esophageal Cancer

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and toxicities of concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy in the treatment of locally advanced esophageal cancer.Methods Eighty patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer were divided into two groups.The 40 patients in the concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy group were treated with concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy;the other 40 patients in the radiotherapy group were treated with radiotherapy alone.The chemotherapy regimen was DF regimen,the radiotherapy dosage was 60-64 Gy.The efficacy and toxicities were respectively observed after treatment.Results The response rate was 95.0% in the concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy group,and was 82.5% in the radiotherapy group(P>0.05).The 1-,2-and 3-year survival rates were 47.5%,35.0%,25.0% in the concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy group,and were 32.5%,25.0%,12.5% in the radiotherapy group(P>0.05).There were no serious toxicities in the two groups;there was no significant difference in the incidence rates of the two groups(P>0.05).Conclusion The efficacy of concurrent radiotherapy and chemotherapy seems to be better than that of the radiotherapy alone in the treatment of locally advanced esophageal cancer,and does not increase the serious toxicities.
