Abstract:
Miniature antimony–antimony oxide sensors have been used to record intraesophageal pH during diagnostic esophageal manometry. The electrodes have a rapid response time and sufficient accuracy and reproducibility to give good assessment of gastroesophageal reflux. The electrodes are durable and have a very low impedance (< 100 KΩ). Because of this, they do not need a shielded lead and can be incorporated in a small, flexible manometry catheter. This minimizes patient discomfort and reduces functional disturbances in the esophagus. These miniature electrodes have been successfully used in more than 360 patients.
