Relationship between IL-8 and airway obstruction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease

Objective To study the relationship between the IL-8 levels in sputum and the air-way obstruction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods Cells ininduced sputum from 16 COPD patients. 15 patients with chronic bronchitis and 15 healthy volun-teers were stained and analysed micropically. The levels of IL-8 in fluid-phase were measured byELISA. Results The percentage of neutrophils and the level of IL-8 in sputum from COPD patientswere significantly higher than those from patients with chronic bronchitis and from normal subjects.FEV_1 % correlated negatively with IL-8 (r = - 0. 85, P <0. 01 ) and with the percentage of neu-trophils (r = -0. 79.
