Effect of Illness Acceptance and Family Care on the Sense of Coherence of Elderly Patients with Comorbidity

Objective To investigate the effect of illness acceptance and family care on the sense of coherence of elderly patients with comorbidities,and to provide basis for promoting the mental health of the elderly. Methods From September 2020 to February 2021,444 elderly patients with comorbidities were selected from Department of Geriatrics of a tertiary A hospital by convenience sampling method.And a survey was conducted by using the general information questionnaire,Sense of Coherence Scale,Illness Acceptance Scale,and the family care scale. Results Total scores of sense of coherence in elderly patients with comorbidities was(57.13±14.02),which was at a low level.Illness acceptance and family care were positively correlated with the total scores of the sense of coherence of elderly patients with comorbidities(r=0.648,0.562,all P<0.05).Hierarchical regression analysis showed that age,education level,monthly income,number of illnesses,illness acceptance,and family care were the influencing factors of mental coherence in elderly patients with comorbidities(all P<0.05),among which illness acceptance and family care explained 14.1%of the total variation in the mental consistency of elderly patients with comorbidities(ΔR²=0.141,P<0.001).Conclusions The sense of coherence in elderly patients with comorbidities is at a low level.Medical staff can further improve the level of sense of coherence in elderly patients with comorbidities by improving the illness acceptance and family care.
