The effect of high tibial osteotomy and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty for medial unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis

Objective To investigate the effects of high tibial osteotomy(HTO)and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty(UKA)in the treatment of the medial compartment knee osteoarthritis.Methods The 60 patients with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis were devided into HTO group and UKA group,each group had 30 cases.The intraoperative bleeding volume,operation time,postoperative drainage volume and complications were compared between the two groups.The VAS,Tegner knee motion score,HSS score were recorded at the preoperation and the last follow-up.Results All patients were followed up for 11~33(18.53±6.74)months.The intraoperative blood loss,postoperative drainage volume and operative time in HTO group were significantly more(longer)than those of the UKA group(P<0.05).The VAS,Tegner knee motion score and HSS score at the last follow-up were significantly superior to those of the preoperation(P<0.05);there were no differences in the various indicators between the two groups(P>0.05).No complications such as soft tissue infection,fracture and deep vein thrombosis occurred in the two groups.At the last follow-up,the pain in the knee medial space of the two groups were significantly relieved,and the effected knee function was improved significantly.The varus deformity and force line correction in the HTO group was obvious,the varus deformity in the UKA group was partially corrected.Conclusions HTO and UKA are used to treat medial compartmental knee osteoarthritis,with the advantages of less trauma,faster recovery and the satisfactory short-term effect.
