Abstract: | Diabetes and depression are both common diseases each having a significant impact on the individuals affected, as well as on the health care system. The combination of diabetes and depression leads to disproportionally high mortality and co-morbidity. Only recently, data on the association between diabetes and depression have been available from longitudinal studies. It could be shown that people suffering from depression have a distinctly higher risk of contracting diabetes, whereas the inverse risk is less pronounced. However, people suffering from diabetic complications are at higher risk. Conclusion: Type 2 diabetes and depression are associated. Patients with depression as well as patients with diabetes should be monitored for indications of the other disease. |
