Abstract: | The role of South African Railways and Harbours in spreading disease and health care is examined. Attention is focused on the Railways' campaigns against malaria, plague and infectious diseases. A case study of the 1918 'Spanish Influenza' epidemic illustrates how the Railways diffuse disease and health care, and also demonstrates the disruption of services caused by the influenza. |
