Effect of splenic artery embolization in the treatment of acute traumatic splenic rupture

Objective To evaluate the value of splenic artery embolization(SAE) in the treatment of acute traumatic splenic rupture(ATSR).Methods Totally 101 patients with acute traumatic splenic rupture were performed splenic artery embolization by Seldinger’s technique.Results Distending pain in the left upper abdomen was observed in all patients.Left pleural effusion was observed in 56 cases,retroperitoneal hematoma in 5 cases,spleen abscess in 1 case,pancreatitis in 1 case,and left lower pulmonary atelectasis in 1 case.Totally 96 patients with ATSR obtained good haemostasis effect,successfully achieving the spleen preserving,22 patients of whom were performed artery embolization in the other ruptured organs,achieving 5 normal spleen.The average time of hospitalization was 8.75 days,followed up with satisfactory results after interventional operation.Conclusion SAE can well prevent bleeding,preserve the spleen and keep the immunological function of spleen,which is an effective method of treating rupture of spleen.
