Abstract:Hepatic vein thrombosis, as well as cirrhosis, was produced in Buffalo strain inbred male and female rats 4, 12, 24, and 52 weeks of age. A small number of older rats injected subcutaneously with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) developed thrombosis. The incidence of thrombosis was strikingly increased in male and female animals of ail ages when methylcholanthrene was given in the diet simultaneously with the CCI4. The highest incidence was observed in the 24-week-old males and 52-week-old females. There also was more widespread involvement of the liver. Complete occlusion with infarcts were present in three animals. Thrombi were rarely present in the left ventricle of the heart and splenic artery. There were a few infarcts of the kidney.
