Assessing the use of CD-ROM technology in case-based learning
Authors:Larry J. Oesterle  William Craig Shellhart
Abstract:CD-ROM programs for orthodontic case presentation and biomechanics that demonstrate malocclusions and treatment in a highly visual, animated format are commercially available. The purpose of this study was to determine the usefulness of two of these programs in enhancing case-based learning in a seminar setting. Junior year predoctoral dental students were provided with orthodontic records of patients and asked to work up the patients and present the problem list, diagnosis, treatment objectives and treatment strategies in class. One-half of the class used the CD-ROMs to determine treatment strategies, while the other half of the class used a literature search. The CD-ROM Group used computer technology in class to present the treatment. Effectiveness was evaluated using a case-based examination and a student survey. Results indicated no difference on the examination, but a preference by the students for the use of the CD-ROMs both in researching possible treatment and for the in-class presentations. The commercially available CD-ROMs appear to be a useful way of enhancing student interest in orthodontic case-based seminars, but may have little effect on actual learning.
