The expression and significance of p53 and bcl-2 in lacrimal gland epithelial neoplasms

Objective To investigate the expression of p53 and bcl-2 in normal lacrimal, benign and malignant neoplasms of lacrimal gland, to analyze relationship between above biological remarks and clinical or pathological of lacrimal tumors, to study their action in occurrence of lacriaml benign, malignant tumor and to provide evidence for differential diagnosis, therapy and prognosis estimation. Method Of 35 Pleomorphic adenoma, 28 Malignant lacrimal gland tumors and 9 normal lacrimal gland specimens were collected. The expression of p53 and bcl-2 was analyzed with immunohistochemistry in order to find the difference in the above-mentioned tissues. Results The expression of p53 and bcl-2 shows an increasing tendency from normal lacrimal to benign and malignant. Both p53 and bcl-2 expression were positive in 26 cases. Neither p53 nor bcl-2 was positive in 22 cases. These numbers were significantly higher than that single positive or monomial negative (P ＜0.05). Conclusions p53 and bcl-2 may involve occurrence of lacrimal epithelial tumors and may be a biological remark of identifying normal lacrimal gland, lacrimal benign or malignant tumor. p53 and bcl-2seems to participate in occurring of lacrimal malignant tumors and be biological parameters which identify malignant from benign lacrimal gland. This study indicates that p53 and bcl-2 play important roles in lacrimal gland epithelial neoplasms. They are co-operative factors in the process of occurrence and development of lacrimal gland adenoid cystic carcinoma.
