Dystrophic calcification in the heel pad

We present a hitherto unreported condition of an acute onset dystrophic calcification in the heel pad presenting as acute plantar fasciitis.A review of English literature has revealed reports of acute calcification in the rotator cuff, around the elbow, metacarpo-phalangeal joints, subacromial bursae and in the ulnar collateral ligament of the wrist, but we have been unable to identify the heel pad as a site of dystrophic calcification in our literature search.Acute calcification should therefore be borne in mind when dealing with cases of heel pain with unusual presentation.
