Methods: 27 patients with painful bone metastasis of prostate cancer were randomly divided into 2 groups: 14 patients were given a combination of 153Sm EDTMP (1110-1480 MBq) and endocrine therapy, while 13 patients (control) were treated only with endocrine therapy. Three months later, bone radionuclide imaging examination was performed. Results: In the treatment group the metastatic bone pain was relieved in 13/14 (92.9 %), which is slightly higher (P>0.05)than that of the controls (10/13, 76.9 %). The median time for the beginning of pain release was 4 days in the treatment group and 8 days in the controls (P<0.01). Moreover, the objective response rate of bony metastasis 3 months later was 85.7 % (12/14) in the treatment group, which is significantly higher (P<0.05) than that in the controls (6/13, 46.2 %).
