Abstract: | Administration of PGE2, PGF2 alpha, isotocin, and vasotocin to pregnant guppies during late gestation induced premature parturition. Indomethacin (10 micrograms/g body wt), the cyclooxygenase inhibitor, did not inhibit parturition at term, suggesting that some lipoxygenase metabolites may be involved in the induction of parturition. Pituitary extract, as well as LH-RH, did not induce premature parturition. It may be that in the guppy, in which ovulation occurs at the end of gestation just prior to parturition, gonadotropin is not involved in the induction of ovulation and parturition. |
