Imaging analysis of the nasopharyngeal tissue and posterior nasopharyngeal fascial space involvement in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Objective:To analyze the imaging features of the nasopharyngeal tissue and posterior nasopharyngeal fascial space involvement in nasopharyngeal carcinoma,and to explore the correlation between prevertebral muscle invasion and occipital skull base invasion.Methods:A group of 152 untreated patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma who underwent MRI of the nasopharynx and neck were enrolled,and the tissue structure invasion around lesions was summarized.The characteristics and correlation of invasion of the fascial space in the posterior nasopharynx of the nasopharyngeal carcinoma were analyzed by combining with the literature.Results:The most common tissue invaded by nasopharyngeal carcinoma was the prevertebral muscle(62.50%),followed by parapharyngeal space(52.63%)and the occipital skull base(36.84%),internal pterygoid muscle(30.92%),cavernous sinus(14.47%),and lateral pterygoid muscle(9.87%).Spearman rank correlation coefficient between the retropharyngeal lymph node metastasis and invasion of prevertebral muscle in nasopharyngeal carcinoma was-0.088(P=0.283),which indicated no significant correlation.Spearman rank correlation coefficient between the invasion of prevertebral muscle and occipital skull base invasion in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients was 0.507(P<0.001),which indicated a significant correlation.Conclusions:Prevertebral muscle and occipital skull base invasion have a high invasion rate and significant correlation in nasopharyngeal carcinoma,and whether this has similar clinical significance for nasopharyngeal carcinoma prognosis needs further study.
