A nomogram for the emergency treatment of metabolic acidosis

Results obtained using a new standardized method of correction of acidotic states are reported in this paper. The treatment consists in giving the patient a mixture of buffers including sodium bicarbonate, sodium lactate and Tham. The formula needed for a particular patient can be calculated by the use of a nomogram that takes into account all the parameters that define the acidotic state. Sixty-seven patients with different degrees of severe acidosis have been treated by this method. Optimum correction has been obtained in all the cases. The efficiency of the correction has been evaluated by the method proposed in the preceding paper (Bondoli, Magalini &; Proietti, 1973).
