Correlation analysis between the colony density of Lactobacilli in oral cavity and the existing status and development of primary dental caries

Objective:To study the correlation between the colony density of Lactobacilli in oral saliva and the existing status and development of primary dental caries,and to evaluate the effect of Dentocult LB as a method of caries activity test(CAT).Methods:A total of 223 kindergarten children in Shenzhen,aged 2~4 years,were selected for the study.The oral examination was carried out and the colony density of Lactobacilli in oral saliva was detected by Dentocult LB test.The oral reexamination was carried out two years later.The caries prevalence rate,decayed-missing-filled tooth(dmft),decayed-missing-filled surface(dmfs)and caries severity index(CSI)were calculated respectively at the start and end of the two years,and the relevant indexes were statistically analyzed.Results:The caries prevalence rate,dmft,dmfs and CSI increased along with the Dentocult LB level at the start and end of the two years,and the difference of dmft,dmfs and CSI also appeared increasing along with the Dentocult LB level during these two years,and all the differences were statistically significant(P<0.001).The increase of caries prevalence rate during these two years had no statistical difference among Dentocult LB levels(P>0.05).There were high positive correlations between Dentocult LB level and dmft,dmfs,CSI and their increments at the start and end of the two years.Conclusion:There are significant positive correlations between the colony density of Lactobacilli in oral cavity and the existing status,development trend of primary dental caries.Dentocult LB test is a reliable and effective CAT method.
